Railing on Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza

The rediscovered gateway of the Duomo.

The project to restore the entrance railing of the Duomo on Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza was strongly championed by the Association in order to recover the historical memory of this place: the first true entrance to the Cathedral, which welcomed the faithful arriving from beyond the walls at Porta Capuana.

At the end of the nineteenth century, in fact, as the geometries of the city changed, the main entrance was moved to Via Duomo, which became a principal artery and shed its guise as the Roman cardo.

On Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza there remains the imposing railing in iron and piperno, surmounted by pine cones, which dates back to the fifteenth century and protects the imposing piperno staircase leading up to the Cathedral.

The gate stands directly opposite the obelisk of San Gennaro, realised by the architect Cosimo Fanzago in the seventeenth century.

The president, the board and all the members thank the patrons Jan and Joanna Fabre, who contributed to the intervention with the precise intention of bringing into relation two important institutions especially dear to them: the Cathedral of Naples (with the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro and the Cappella Capece Minutolo) and the Pio Monte della Misericordia.
