Railing on Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza

The restoration project of the entrance gate to the Cathedral on Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza was strongly supported by the Association to rediscover the historical memory of this place: the first real entrance to the Cathedral, which welcomed the faithful coming from beyond the walls of Porta Capuana.

In fact, at the end of the 19th century, with the change in urban geometries, the main entrance was moved to Via Duomo which became a main artery and lost its role as a Roman cornerstone.

On Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza, the imposing iron and piperno gate remains, surmounted by pine cones, which dates back to the 15th century and protects the imposing piperno staircase leading to the Cathedral.

The gate is located right in front of the obelisk of San Gennaro, created by the architect Cosimo Fanzago in the 17th century.

The president, the board and the members all thank the patrons Jan and Joanna Fabre, who contributed to the intervention with the precise intention of connecting two important institutions dear to them: the Cathedral of Naples (with the chapel of the treasure of Gennaro and the Capece Minutolo Chapel) and the Pio Monte della Misericordia.
