Monumental doorway

A bronze-coloured doorway.

Founded in 1808, the State Archives of Naples is one of the most important and ancient centres of Benedictine spirituality in Southern Italy.

With its four floors and its repositories holding over seventy linear kilometres of documents, the Neapolitan archive is an essential point of reference for research in the field of the medieval, modern and contemporary history of Italy and Europe, and above all of Southern Italy.

The restoration and conservation of this cultural jewel of the utmost prestige for the Campanian city is among the projects realised by Friends of Naples.

The phases of the work involved sanding, the application of anti-rust primer and the enamelling of the supports of the iron gate. Both the wooden doorway and the wood-and-glass door underwent paint stripping, sanding and repainting treatments.

The finishes were painted in a green-brown colour, a chromatic choice that simulates bronze, in keeping with the most ancient Neapolitan tradition.
