The Obelisco della Meridiana, originally the gnomon of the sundial, is one of the obelisks of Naples.
It is located inside the Villa Comunale, its construction is due to Stefano Gasse, during the period of the expansion of the eighteenth-century garden.
The work is composed of a piperno obelisk surmounted by a brass sphere (now kept in the deposits of the Municipality of Naples) and a meridian line in piperno and white marble.
By replacing the bronze sphere, the obelisk’s integrity was restored. The graffiti and layers of grime, composed of soot and dirt that had accumulated over the years on both the vertical (obelisk) and horizontal (sundial) elements, were removed. Increasing amounts of biological attack were also eliminated, and all surfaces affected by other deterioration processes were preserved.
Period: XVIII century.
